Imagine you're looking for love online.Â
You're scanning profiles.

 Notice how that felt for you.
The first one... was probably like, "okay."Â
On the other hand, the second one probably creates an immediate response. You're either leaning in... or leaning away.
Guess which kind of copy you want to be writing?

Specificity is dangerous.
The minute you say something super specific -- as opposed to generic and vague -- you're take a risk.
The other personâs eyes might go wide in excited recognition, as they shout âohmygod, ME TOO!!!!!!â
Or⊠their eyes might glaze over and say, âUh huh⊠thatâs nice.â
You either meet your new date (or BFF), or you just weirded someone out and now have to go find someone new to talk to at the party.
âSpecificity â in other words, naming the particular instead of gesturing at the general â has consequences.
In marketing, it actually makes it more likely for you to hear ânoâs, unfollows, and unsubscribes.
(For example, I curse a lot, frequently make poop jokes, and say "Free Palestine". Not everyone is into that.)
It makes it more likely for some people to self-exclude, and distance themselves from you.
But it also makes the YESâs you get more meaningful. It makes the relationships you build on those yesâs stronger.
 Talking polite, beige, non-threatening? About the weather?Â
Thereâs little risk - but also, little reward.
Write in a very specific way about yourself and your work consistently... and you will create a self-curating ecosystem of raving fans.
They will buy from you again and again, and refer you to their friends endlessly.
These people will put your nervous system at ease.
They will make it easy to do your best work.
And take the stress out of selling.
This replaces the need for constantly posting online... or spending $$$$ on ads.
